My Focus:

Accessible childcare is crucial for building stable and thriving communities. It impacts every aspect of life in Sudbury, from economic stability and workforce participation to child development and family well-being. When families have access to affordable childcare, parents can maintain employment, children receive early education, and communities become more economically resilient. It's about creating a Sudbury where evidence-based childcare policies prevail, and compassion guides our response to the needs of low-income families.

Why this matters?

Canada's $10-a-day childcare program, while well-intentioned, is falling short in addressing the needs of low-income families, particularly in communities like Sudbury, Ontario. The lack of accessible childcare is trapping families in cycles of poverty and unemployment, hindering economic growth and social mobility. It's time for Sudbury to unite, advocate for comprehensive childcare solutions, and support innovative approaches to ensure all families have access to affordable, quality childcare.

More Details

The childcare crisis spans across Canada, affecting both urban centers and smaller cities like Sudbury. The current $10-a-day program has not created enough new spaces, leaving many families on long waitlists. This crisis results in job losses, family separations due to social assistance rules, and continued strain on local resources. From Vancouver's childcare initiatives to the lack of options in smaller cities, each region faces unique challenges in ensuring fair and effective childcare policies for all.

Key Challenges

  • Insufficient childcare spaces, especially for low-income families
  • Long waitlists for affordable childcare programs
  • Current $10-a-day program not targeted enough to those most in need
